More homes needed

The debate a while ago about Council Housing has now been reported in the local press.

The fact that there will be 10,000 fewer low cost houses to rent 5 years from now, however, has not been reported. One of the most frequent issues at my advice bureau is the unavailability of housing to rent at a reasonable price. It means that people on 10-12K generally have difficulty finding somewhere to live.

I'm afraid the problem lies not only with New Labour but with all three main political parties. Councillors have been all too keen to hive off their responsibilities for council housing under Large Scale Voluntary Transfer. In nearby Walsall Labour, Tory and Lib Dem politicians relentlessly pursued the stock disposal option, and no-one was prepared to even consider alternatives. To make matters worse, the Officer driving it through stood as a parliamentary candidate for... The Green Party!!!

Perhaps Fran could expand on the benefits of a so-called 'social landlord' that could not have been achieved equally by the Government properly funding local authority housing?
