It would be nice to be asked

I was very busy yesterday (hence no blog entry). Meetings in Birmingham (and I put a lot of effort into avoiding inefficient meetings) took a lot of time. I then spent the whole of the afternoon in a meeting of the parliamentary party followed by another couple of events. This left little time.

I then find in the newspaper today that one of our policies is about to changed. Well, if would be nice to be asked about it before it is announced.

Perhaps the worst thing about it is that it would have been dropped even in the unlikely event of the Lib Dems winning the election or holding the balance of power. I seems to me that all three main parties are now competing for the Home Counties middle ground vote as the determining factor in a General Election. As Kinnock said, in the context of the Liverpool Militants, "You can have all the principles in the world, but without power they count for nothing." Of course, the flip side of that coin is, "You can have all the power in the world....etc."

I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization. But has to have been originated by someone. The web link shown goes through the derivation which appears to be more linked to an anonymous British Soldier WW2 than any Roman or Greek General called by a name perming 2 out of (Gaius, Galus, Petronius and Arbiter).
