Good results in Birmingham

We were very pleased to win Hodge Hill and move into second place in Tyburn. This means that our sitting Councillor in Tyburn will be able to hold her seat in 2008.

We were also pleased to hold Springfield (a seat we lost last year).

Notwithstanding the framing of our candidate in Bordesley for postal vote misdirection he still won 2,628 votes against Labour's 3,908.

Sadly we lost Dilawar Khan in Sparkbrook. He had his nose broken at the start of the campaign and his car smashed up on election day. This is a worrying movement towards more violent campaigns that Respect need to be held responsible for.

I have heard another side to the Dilawar Khan story...

PH: I'd be interested to know what this was.

I imagine the Lib Dems will be happier this year than they were last, though the result was the same (no net change). The Hodge Hill gain was probably aided by the anti-Tesco campaigner.

(by which I mean, the anti-Tesco campaigner standing and taking away some Labour votes, not by the anti-Tesco campaigner supporting the Lib Dems, obviously.)

Six months for recording a court hearing - Norman Scarth

The link is in Russian about the imprisonment of Norman Scarth who is actually 85. He has a complex history including a court hearing which found that he used a chainsaw to fight off bailiffs when he was 75. [a court judgment which is disputed see comments] However, that does not justify imprisoning him for 6 months for recording a court hearing (see the link and ask google to translate it if your Russian is not up to it). It has got into the Argyll News Because he has been held such that people cannot get to him to sign paperwork an application for a writ of Habeas Corpus was made today. This has been adjourned until next week. The English judicial system is really not good at responding to major abuses of human rights by the judicial system.
