Although an important news story, I feel it was given too much attention on BBC Radio 4 (live interview, most of morning, research into Ikea's International openings). I reckon it wouldn't have had as much attention if this had happened in Wednesbury. This is yet another occurrence of 'Londonism' or 'anti-Provincial Cityism'.
It is not so much "anti-Provincial" as ease of access. You are right that if it had happened in Wednesbury that would have been too far away for Radio 4 to bother.
