St Patricks Day Parade 2011 Birmingham

Although I didn't get to bed until 2am following the Glee Club at the Lib Dem Conference I did manage to attend the St Patrick's day parade (mainly because I packed everything away before going to bed).

The parade was bigger and better than last year, but I will take a while to put up photos. I will also link to other photo sets, but not immediately.

On this parade "A long way to Tipperary" was played in Bb.

My set is available on flickr as well.

The BBC have a limited number of photos.

Here are from photos from Alabama - just to show how much better the real Birmingham parade is.

Kaz Keily also has a set.

This is the official facebook page. This is a facebook photo album.

Another Flickr set with a good photo of the Tipperary group.

I have at last finished editing my set - and have forwarded them to the Irish Centre, who'd asked me to come along and take crowd shots from a float.

Had a great time, and hopefully you'll like some of my shots, which can be found either on my site (www.carolannphotos.com) although most of them are in a flickr set (http://flickr.com/gp/carolpgh/379tf9/)

Its the long genes that stop working

People who read my blog will be aware that I have for some time argued that most (if not all) diseases of aging are caused by cells not being able to produce enough of the right proteins. What happens is that certain genes stop functioning because of a metabolic imbalance. I was, however, mystified as to why it was always particular genes that stopped working. Recently, however, there have been three papers produced: Aging is associated with a systemic length-associated transcriptome imbalance Age- or lifestyle-induced accumulation of genotoxicity is associated with a generalized shutdown of long gene transcription and Gene Size Matters: An Analysis of Gene Length in the Human Genome From these it is obvious to see that the genes that stop working are the longer ones. To me it is therefore obvious that if there is a shortage of nuclear Acetyl-CoA then it would mean that the probability of longer Genes being transcribed would be reduced to a greater extent than shorter ones.
